Satellite being X-Rayed at Empa
The EURECA satellite gives us the unique opportunity to analyse an object which has been in space for a longer time (about 1 year). This satellite was exposed to extreme space conditions such as radiation, strong temperature gradients, vibrations and impacts by particles travelling through space with a speed of 3km/s. The influence of these space conditions on the satellite materials, modules and structures is investigated in great detail using X-ray analytical methods. We want to understand what structural changes have been taken place and more importantly why they occurred. In consequence this will actively support materials and technology development for aerospace.
