Our mission is to offer new materials solutions on the basis of wet chemical / sol-gel methods and to implement these across the board in the built environment. In this sense, we see ourselves as innovators with focus on the “Energy & Buildings” topic. Our three groups cover the competence in building materials from nano scale up to building integration. Main activities of the Superinsulation Materials group are production of silica aerogels using simplified chemistry routes and their characterization at nano and micro scale. Advanced Colloidal Materials Engineering, on the other hand, develops inorganic functional energy materials (carbons, complex inorganic oxides and thin films) and related conversion and storage systems. The materials competence is then linked to building applications through the Building Integration group which runs common projects with industry partners.
