Joining & Interface Engineering

Our laboratory has long-standing expertise and reputation in the advanced joining (i.e. soldering, brazing, transient-liquid-phase bonding, diffusion bonding) of dissimilar materials (e.g. metal-ceramics, metal-glass, metal-composites) for harsh operating conditions (e.g. at elevated temperatures; in moisture, reactive gasses or ionic liquids; under intense radiation, thermal shock, vibration or cyclic loading).

        • Development and custom-tailored adaptation of advanced soldering and brazing
systems (e.g. surface coatings, interlayers, filler alloys and paste) and joining

        • Design and manufacturing of complex joint assemblies for long-term operation
          under harsh conditions

        • Experimental investigations and lifetime predictions of the thermal, mechanical
and chemical durability of complex joined assemblies under harsh operating

         • Diffusion, wetting, nucleation and phase formation at reacting interfaces
dissimilar materials

         • The thermal, chemical and mechanical integrity of joined assemblies under
            harsh operating conditions

         • The composition- and size-dependent phase stability of solder alloys and
            brazing filler systems
