Urban Energy Systems

Our mission is research, development and technology transfer related to decentralized energy systems, seasonal and hybrid energy storage and sustainable buildings. Via contributions in these areas, we aim to significantly contribute to the national and global transition to efficient, low-carbon energy technologies in the building sector. Our core competences include:

  • Numerical energy systems modelling
  • Design and assessment of decentralized urban energy systems with focus on energy hubs, multi-energy grids, integration of renewable energy systems
  • Design and development of heat and hybrid energy storage components systems
  • Development and demonstration of advanced building and urban energy technologies

Decentralized energy systems

We study decentralized, renewable energy systems at building, district and urban scales, and develop methods, models and tools for the holistic analysis and optimisation of urban energy systems, with emphasis on energy hub and multi-energy systems.


BEST - Building Energy Systems and Technologies

We develop and demonstrate innovative energy technologies and components for buildings, multi-energy grids and districts, meeting the needs of renewable integration, flexibility, dynamic energy markets, and changing living/working and climate conditions. We actively foster research activities with industrial partners, especially also in relation with the NEST building. We specifically also develop new technologies for long-term heat and hybrid (heat, electricity, gas) storage. Present work is focused on NaOH absorption based seasonal heat storage technology.


Sustainable building demonstrators

We develop new building energy technologies and integrate them in research demonstration buildings such as self and NEST.
