Ameet Aiyangar, researcher in Empa's «Mechanical Systems Engineering» lab, has implemented a novel method for the X-ray analysis of joints that goes beyond static imaging. The 4D analysis combines high-precision X-ray videos from two perspectives and reconstructs a four-dimensional motion analysis - i.e. a 3D image while the joint is moving. A biplanar radiographic imaging system (DBRI) is used, which is installed in the Dynamic Imaging Center at sitem-insel, the Swiss Institute for Translational Medicine and Entrepreneurship in Bern.

Detecting instabilities with precision

Optimized therapy instead of unnecessary surgery: The shoulder joint is particularly mobile and equally complex. 4D X-ray analyses should now improve the diagnosis of joint problems. Image: Empa

Shoulder instabilities, for example, are difficult to diagnose as they usually only occur when the shoulder joint is in motion. A time-resolved 3D analysis now makes it possible for the first time to precisely capture these dynamics. Empa researcher Ameet Aiyangar combines X-ray videos with virtual 3D models of the joints to detect these instabilities with millimeter precision.
