Monostrands for the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world

The longest cable-stayed bridge in the world (2'252 m) is on the way to be realised in Greece. The Rion-Antirion bridge, connecting the Peloponnes to the mainland, is due to be opened to traffic in 2004.

The bridge rests on 4 large foundation pylons (Height: 160 m above sea level, diameter: 90 m) positioned on the seabed, in a depth of water ranging from 50 to 65 m. The stay cables will be made of galvanized strands with multiple anti-corrosion lining. Tensile tests, one-pin tests, fatigue tests and determination of the zinc coating of monostrands are carried out at the EMPA according to standard prXP A 35-035.
