New Head of Department at Empa
Nathalie Casas takes over from Brigitte Buchmann

The Empa Directorate has appointed a successor to Brigitte Buchmann in her role as Department Head: Nathalie Casas, a chemical and bioengineer and expert in CO2 capture, will take over as Head of the Department "Energy, Mobility and Environment" on 1 October 2023.

Nathalie Casas brings a broad range of start-up, industry, and innovation promotion experience in addition to her academic track record with cutting-edge research. As a long-time leader in the fields of research, development and technology, she also has a wide range of additional skills, including the successful building of teams and the recruitment of exceptional international talent. Casas' research focuses on carbon dioxide removal and Power-to-X technologies. She studied chemical and bioengineering at ETH Zurich and received her PhD also from ETH Zurich for the development of an adsorption process for pre-combustion CO2 capture in the context of an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC).
Casas currently works at the ETH spin-off and cleantech company Climeworks as Head of R&D and is a member of the Innosuisse Innovation Council. She will be leading Empa's "Energy, Mobility and Environment" department as of 1 October 2023, and will succeed Brigitte Buchmann, who will retire this summer.
