Composites of methylcellulose (MC) with nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) or microfibrillated cellulose (MFC)

Methylcellulose is the least hydrophilic cellulose ether among the water-soluble cellulose ethers. Its properties, long-term stability and purity, good tensile strength for the re-gluing of flaking paints on canvas or wood and good wood bonding properties make this cellulose derivative interesting for many restorers and conservation applications. In order to improve the properties of methylcellulose, we investigate composites with nanocellulose (nanocrystalline cellulose and microfibrillated cellulose). Nanocellulose has recently been proposed as a novel consolidant for the consolidation of canvas and paper and as a reinforcement agent. We therefore expect water-soluble consolidants with high mechanical stability when methylcellulose is combined with nanocellulose.
