Women's & Early Life Health
Life in Focus: Pioneering Women's, Pregnancy and Newborn Health Science
Women's and maternity health remains a critical yet under-researched area of global health, with significant implications for women's, pregnancy, and neonatal outcomes. Conditions such as endometriosis, women's cancer, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and preterm birth contribute extensively to morbidity and mortali-ty worldwide. The widespread use of off-label medications during pregnancy, due to limited safety and effica-cy data, highlights a critical gap in evidence-based therapies tailored to the unique physiological needs of pregnancy. Moreover, developmental toxicity from exposure to environmental pollutants and chemicals, in-cluding endocrine disruptors and microplastics, poses additional risks, potentially leading to adverse preg-nancy out-comes and long-term health effects in offspring. Current challenges include insufficient understand-ing of the biological mechanisms underlying these conditions, lack of predictive models, inadequate testing of chemicals and pollutants for developmental toxicity, and limited inclusion of pregnant individuals in clinical tri-als. To address these issues, multidisciplinary research is urgently needed to develop targeted diagnostics, therapies, and preventive strategies while ensuring better regulation of environmental exposures. Advancing women's and early life health research will be critical to improving outcomes for women and their children.
