What is HPC

High-Performance Computing (HPC) is a broad field of computational science that heavily exploits supercomputers and distributed computing resources (e.g., cloud computing).

Since November 2019, Empa has a unit dedicated to HPC as part of Empa Scientific IT, together with the Research Data Management unit.  The main goal of this unit is to provide Empa researchers with technical support regarding HPC-related common problems and long-term projects.

HPC support

Empa HPC unit aims at providing support to users on the followings:

  • running massively parallel calculations (i.e., known to scale up to hundreds of computing nodes)
  • efficient running of single-core calculations/post-processing analyses
  • interactive computing with Jupyter Lab (mostly Python)
