The international competition "beyond bauhaus – prototyping the future" was looking for groundbreaking design ideas and concepts dedicated to a socially relevant topic. The call was launched by the initiative "Deutschland – Land der Ideen" together with the Federal Foreign Office , the Lotto Stiftung Berlin and SAP as part of the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus. The submitted proposals demonstrate the challenges of our time: They range from food cultivation on open waters to personalized therapies that can be applied to the skin and sustainable building materials.

Of the approximately 1,500 projects submitted from all over the world, the jury selected the 20 most promising and announced them at an event in mid-August in Berlin. The NEST unit "Urban Mining & Recycling" is one of the winners. The residential unit integrated into NEST in 2018 shows how circular economy works in the construction industry. The three-room apartment, which was designed by German architects Werner Sobek, Dirk E. Hebel and Felix Heisel, can be completely disassembled according to type, and all materials can either be reused, recycled or composted after dismantling.
