Since 1 February 2020, Ivan Lunati is head of Empa's Multiscale Studies in Building Physics lab. With his profound scientific expertise and broad experience, the physicist will strengthen Empa's activities in the fields of numerical multiscale modeling, machine learning, scientific computing and state-of-the-art experimental methods. Lunati's research focus is on porous materials, which are ubiquitous in technical applications and play a central role in energy research. In recent years, he has been working on a wide range of research questions related to the physics of porous materials and multiphase flow.

During a scientific career of more than 15 years, Lunati has made significant contributions to the promotion of a sustainable society through innovative methods. Ivan Lunati was previously a SNSF professor at the University of Lausanne in the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Environment where he established a research team for multiphysics and coupled processes. Prior to his stint in Lausanne, Lunati conducted research at various international research centers and universities, including ETH Zurich, EPFL, ENSAM in Bordeaux, the University of Milan and Chevron ETC in California. Thanks to his international background, Ivan Lunati is fluent in German, French and English in addition to his Italian mother tongue, and is therefore perfectly suited to working in a highly international environment such as Empa.
