Spectrochemistry bridges the historical separation between "preparative" materials science (=synthesis) and "validative" material science (=analysis). During a spectroscopic process, materials are transformed in an analytical intermediate state (excitation, ionization, chemical rearrangement, plasma, protonation, generation of holes, etc.) that it is interesting to study as a target system. The special capability to induce and manipulate exotic states and/or defects, and their distribution in materials, plays a crucial role in the performance of large variety of devices.
