The aim of this project is the fabrication of a medium-sized photoelectrochemical demonstrator cell with an active electrode area of 40 cm2, achieving overall water splitting at a competitive solar-to-hydrogen efficiency by improving the photoanode, the photcathode and employing a tandem device architecture. In a tandem device the anode and the cathode are photo-electrochemically active. This opens the door to the fabrication of larger scale demonstrators and is a significant step towards an industrial use of the photo-electrochemical cells for hydrogen production.
