Prof. Dr. Sergei Popov: Transparent wood and photonics – peculiar finding or future technology?

Abstract
One of the remarkable achievements of recent progress in wood technology is the development of optically transparent wood (TW) which has attracted much interest within scientific community. This anisotropically scattering material with high transmission and strong haze in visible range demonstrates interesting optical properties and offers peculiar opportunities for various applications. Basic properties of light propagation in this material, including variation of the light polarization, polarization dependent transparency, demonstration of the first wood-based laser, have been studied in our research group. Experimental results and various approaches to investigate the TW will be discussed.
