Protein Imaging and Analytics
The texture of solid surfaces can influence protein adsorption. The conformational changes a protein in aqueous medium undergoes upon interacting with a surface can be visualised using liquid-based scanning probe microscopy. In this project, we mainly rely on a wide range of scanning probe microscopes available within our group to study the assembly, morphology, size and shape of proteins with sub-2nm spatial resolution at solvated interfaces. Our principal focus within this project is to understand the aggregation of surface confined amyloid peptides such as amyloid beta implicated in the pathology of Alzheimer’s and alpha synuclein implicated in the pathology of Parkinson’s disease. For the surfaces, we rely on both non-functionalised and organic spacer-coated 2D atomic materials such as epitaxial graphene and 2D-MoS2 as reliable imaging platforms.
