Design of Asphalt Mixtures Modified with Phase Change Materials
In this project new designs of asphalt mixtures modified with phase change materials will be developed to minimize temperature-related performance problems of roads as well as the effect of the so-called heat island effect in urban areas.
The proposed project aims at exploring in the concept of encapsulated phase change materials as additives in asphalt mixtures, particularly regarding their potential of minimizing high and low temperature-related problems. Different alternatives of PCM will be analysed regarding the thermodynamic stability with asphalt materials as well as the mixing conditions. Then, PCM-asphalt systems will be optimized by studying their thermal efficiency and mechanical performance at different ranges of temperature.
