Shantanu Mishra

Postdoctoral Researcher
Shantanu Mishra obtained his BS degree in Engineering Physics from the National Institute of Technology at Calicut, India, and MS degrees in Applied and Engineering Physics and Materials Science from the TU Munich, Germany and the Université de Montpellier, France, respectively. He worked at the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering and Imaging at the Paul Scherrer Institut at Villigen, Switzerland for his Master thesis, studying the structure and magnetic ordering in non-stoichiometric rare-earth nickelates using neutron scattering and bulk magnetometry. He joined the nanotech@surfaces Laboratory at Empa as a PhD student in April 2016, and received his PhD in April 2020 from the University of Zurich, Switzerland for atomic-scale studies of carbon magnetism in nanographenes using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher in the group, building up on his previous research to investigate emergent magnetic phases in organic spin chains and lattices. For his research on carbon magnetism, Shantanu received the Empa Forschungspreis (2019), the IBM prize of the Swiss Physical Society (2020) and the Swiss Nanotechnology PhD award (2020).

Carbon magnetism, non-benzenoid ring topologies in graphene nanostructures, on-surface synthesis and scanning probe microscopy.
