Imaging

2D chemical mapping of hetero-structured or micro-fabricated materials surfaces are obtained on are-as from 10x10µm2 up to several cm2 and with down to 200nm lateral resolution. Spatial location and correlation of desired atoms, molecules and substances is achieved, with the possibility to retrieve quantitative information at any selected location and/or full chemical spectrum at every pixel.

Imaging Example: Adhesion of additives on cement clinkers

Figure A shows a ToF-SIMS chemical map (image) of a cement clinker cross-section. The different chemical phases constituting this material are identified and localized. In figure B, the local distribution of a common additive (PCE) is shown. Clearly, PCE binds selectively to one specific clinker phase only. This explains the large variability in efficiency observed with this additive on different clinkers with vary-ing composition.
