Focus: Solar energy supply

Nov 12, 2012 | RAINER KLOSE

Solar modules made from silicon are too rigid for many applications – and they are often too expensive. Solar cells on flexible film are the solution, and are capable of generating power from sunlight much more cheaply. Empa is researching into the construction of such cells, and a start-up company is already trialling series production next door. Two types of cells are examinated: Inorganic solar cells – so called CIGS cells – on the one hand, which should be ready for market in a few years. On the other hand Empa does research on organic solar cells on the basis of dyes. With this technology, transparent solar cells become possible.

Aside of the focus-theme "Solar energy supply" other themes don't fall short: EmpaNews shows the new natural gas hybrid car called CLEVER and asks the new head of department Brigitte Buchmann on the future of Empa research. The new issue also tells about a new type of asphalt, which is able to heal cracks by itself. A new survey on the ecologic impact of biofules show myths of sustainable energy in a new light.
