The Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen)
Solothurn and Beider Basel together with Circon AG present an interactive integrated
information system for transport companies. The goal of the government sponsored project
(Commission for Technology and Innovation, CTI) is to optimize transportation of goods
according to ecological and economic criteria. We show a simulation tool with enhanced
algorithms that supports optimal route planning. The effect of these software solutions on
the evironment and the resulting reduction of transportation cost will be visualized.

and geology data is the most widely used environmental system in the world. Encapsulated

INTERACT is a European research and development project
developing tools for efficient online environmental permitting and access to environmental
information via the Internet. The project is partially funded by the European Commission
within the 5th framework IST programme. Our exhibition stand presents the progress of the
INTERACT product development and introduces the software developers with their specific
tasks within the INTERACT programme: CSI - Direzione Regione Piemonte Consortio per il
Sistema Informatico; Hydrosoft Veleslavin s.r.o.; IN+ GmbH Environmental Management
Systems.

GEI GmbH
T-Systems will present a very new and modern environmental
information and risk management system, which already has passed the operational pilot
phase: The Remote Monitoring System for Nuclear Power Plants (in Baden-Württemberg) is a
complex measuring and information system which records and monitors approx. 100,000
measured values per day. The actual operational state of the facilities including their
emissions into air and water, together with the radioactive immissions into the
environment are automatically determined and visualized.

ENVINET Network Management Centre NMC is a highly modular
system of the latest generation for the logging, management and distribution of
environmental data. ENVINET NMC encompasses all relevant functions for the continuous and
discrete logging, verification, circulation and publication of environmental data as well
as online presentation on the Internet and WAP. It includes the topics of radioactivity,
meteorology, hydrology and air quality as well as the processing of mobile and laboratory
data.

Thomas Mayer, Dipl.-Ing., synergitec in Freiburg, Germany,
assists the industry in cutting down on "non-product-output". The successful
approach to enhance material efficiency combines the knowledge available on-site with

present data and services from distributed sources. With disy Cadenza we present a
platform that provides advantage through integrated use of catalog services, business data
and geographical services: (1) better information supply for knowledge workers, business
partners, and customers; (2) single point of access for heterogenous information from
different departments.

Umwelt Focus has established itself as leading magazine for
environmental management and technology in Switzerland. Umwelt Focus readers are
professionals handling environmental issues on a management level in the industry, in
public offices, in the financial sector or work as engineers and consultants. Umwelt Focus
combines technical, managemental and economical aspects of environmental affairs. As the
Swiss member of the European Environmental Press EEP, Umwelt Focus is also a partner in
the exchange of information and knowledge within the EU.
10 Simutech
Simutech offers database management and simulation tools:
HIS3D is the environmental-data-management-system: measurement stations (e.g. near
hydro-power-plants) deliver water level and quality values (chemical, biological) to
HIS3D, which analyses and categorises the values. HIS3D contains several modules, e.g. for
graphical presentation and administrating measurement coordinates. eHIS InterStore is the
platform for selling, presenting and distributing environmental data in the Internet and
the Intranet. Selecting measurement stations in a map the customer accesses and orders
data values, using a fully automated process for paying and delivery.
11 Finland Futures Research
Centre
"The Eco-Information Society: Criteria and Operational
Possibilities (eKnowledge)" is a part of the "Sustainable development and the
Information society"-project (KESTY) of the Finnish Ministry of the Environment. The
researchers analyse the criteria of sustainable development in the Finnish information
society and create the sustainable development indicators for the information society. The
researchers will also produce environmental friendly innovations in co-operation with two
representative spearhead programmes of the Finnish national strategy for Information
Society: the "Personal Navigation (NAVI)" and the "Telework" programme
(eWork).

Sustainability in the Information Society (SIS) is an
Innovation and Cooperation Programme funded by the Council of the Swiss Federal Institutes
of Technology (ETH-Rat). The aim of this programme, carried out by the Swiss Federal
Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA), is to assess the opportunities and
risks of Information Technology (IT) for sustainable development, to develop methods for
analysing the relationship between material and information flows in society, and to
design and implement IT applications that help to approach the goal of sustainable
development.

Results of the EU Life Project "Pollution Reduction
and Sustainable Management in the Wine Industry" are presented. In all of the wine
producing processes water is the governing parameter and the main vehicle of pollution
spreading. The proposed strategy for wine pollution control includes the following
objectives: (1) a reduction of water consumption during the industrial processes of
pressing, racking, detartrating and fil-tration and a better water management, and (2) an
optimization of the wastewater treatment. We present a typical waste treatment strategy of
organic polluting agents, which are mainly presented in the water used in the various
industrial processes and in the solid wastes produced by the pressing, crushing and
racking processes.

The Institute for Bauinformatik presents www-based
collaborative engineering environments used in modern distributed research and education
projects in the broad multi-disciplinary domain of environment water. The exhibition
examples are coming from training, education and research focusing on the relation between
the learning processes, methods & tools and research & technological development,
on www-based collaborative engineering in hydroscience (educational environment example) and on the
management of inundation risks caused by catastrophic flood events (research project
environment example OSIRIS).

The working group for Business Information Systems of the
Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg demonstrates the automated environmental reporting
based on structuring and standardising of environmental documents using XML. A software
tool will be presented which provides the automated integration of eco-balance data into
an environmental report and which facilitates the creation and the target group-oriented
preparation of environmental reports. Furthermore four new book publications from the
study group in the fields of environmental information systems, disassembly planning and
control, return flow prognosis and material flow based eco-balancing evaluating a beer
production process will be presented.

BUSTER - a tool for semantic data integration: The Bremen
University Semantic Translator for Enhanced Retrieval (BUSTER) tackles problems with
regard to search and integration of information in distributed, heterogeneous information
sources. To access such information sources as efficiently as possible, technical,
structural and semantic problems must be solved. The BUSTER system offers an integrated
solution for this problem by using a combination of different technologies such as
standard markup languages, mediator systems, ontologies and knowledge-based classifiers.

At the exhibition the internet-based network
"eco-campus.net" will be presented. The "Network for an Environmentally
Sound Development of Universities" is a union of projects, people and universities
actively supporting a sustainable development of universities. The network connects the
activities of university members, makes available a comfortable and inexpensive basis for
communication and information, enables a continuing exchange of knowledge and experiences,
increases the cooperation of environmental representatives at universities, and cooperate
with foreign networks and universities.

ABIS - Automatic Bee Identification System: A third of the
world's crops require pollination, most of which is performed by bees. On the other hand,
bee populations throughout the world are currently under threat. We clearly need to be
able to monitor bee populations and, consequently, to identify bee species. ABIS -
Automatic Bee Identification System - quickly and accurately classifies live bees from
images of their wings. Our exhibit will explain the classification process and give
demonstrations of the identification system in action.
20 Workshop W.7: Environmental
education
Information technology and the new focus of sustainable
development have changed environmental education dramatically in the past years.
Environmental issues have had a strong presence from the very beginning of the internet.
In the workshop the theoretical approaches and concrete projects experiences from six
authors will be presented and used as a basis to set up a set of "success
factors" on how information systems can contribute to the ambitious goal which the
educational sector is faced with in sustainable development.
