W.3 Workshop: The Rebound Effect in the Information Society
Chair: Mathias Binswanger, FHSO, Olten,
Switzerland (14:3018:00)
The rebound effect was originally known as the economic phenomenon that an increase in
energy efficiency usually does not lead to a decrease in overall energy consumption.Later
on, this concept was generalized to cover other resources as well besides energy. Are
there new types of the general rebound effect in the information society? The rebound
effect may be more important today with respect to time-saving innovations than with
respect to energy-saving innovations.

W. 9 International Workshop on Information Infrastructure
(CODATA-Workshop, 10:00 13:00 and 15:30
18:00, room D.3.1,
continued on Saturday, October 13, until 16:00, room E.33.1)
Chair: Horst Kremers, Berlin
The manageability of complex information systems for multidisciplinary cooperation and
its use in decision support depends on basic methods and techniques that cover specific
application layers. CODATA (Committee on Data for Science and Technology of the
International Council of Science) supports these cross-discipline aspects that are
fundamental for open access and for appropriate use of reliable data. Besides presentation
and discussion of papers the workshop is intended to collect recommendations for
state-of-the-art best practice as well as to provide a research and development
perspective for national and international action. The Workshop will be continued on
Saturday, October 13, and will close at 16:00.
