Materials for Energy Technologies

Each day every single person in Switzerland consumes about 6000 Watts of energy, for the production of food and other goods, for heating and cooling buildings, and for mobility. This figure is significantly higher than the target of the 2000-Watt society, so new energy concepts and technologies are called for. With the aim of reducing energy consumption by two-thirds, we are investigating and researching innovative materials, processes and systems for energy conversion, storage and transport. We are looking for ways to reduce conversion losses, and to develop more efficient energy systems, to increase the use of renewable energy sources and to minimize the risks associated with new energy concepts.
