Our laboratory is active in research and development of biomaterials and biomolecules for medical and industrially relevant applications. We also perform services in the area of biotechnology and (bio-) polymer analytics.
White or industrial biotechnology is a key technology for biology-oriented materials science. It allows on the one hand fabricating, improving and functionalizing polymers from natural resources and on the other hand is used to generate novel and save (macro-) molecules that are suitable for applications on or inside the human body.
Empa uses this technology widely. We develop new biocatalysts for green chemistry, which means to perform chemical reactions in a sustainable way or to enable difficult reactions with the help of enzymes. Microbial, biochemical as well as chemical processes are also applied to synthesize, characterize or functionalize bio-based or biodegradable polymers.
