The field of printed electronics or organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) has been identified by both industry and academia as an interesting area to pave the way towards new applications in electronics such as flexible displays or low cost RFID tags. Especially the low-temperature processing, which allows using low-cost plastic substrates, promises to be one of the main driver for this growing field.
BASF has focused not only to obtain record charge carrier mobilities but also to reach very high uniformities of the electronics performance over large areas which is a prerequisite to fabricate e.g. display backplanes, especially for OLED displays which exhibit a satisfying visual quality. To achieve the required homogeneities, BASF’s researchers successfully identified a novel concept to control the domain sizes of organic semiconductors and to optimize the charge transport in the grain boundaries, which leads to microcrystalline materials with good charge transport properties.
The latest material generations exhibit excellent processability at low temperatures, good charge carrier mobility, sufficient stability, low hysteresis behaviour in OTFTs and most importantly a very high uniformity to enable the fabrication of display backplanes.
