The Technology and Society Lab (TSL) is Empa's interdisciplinary research unit which studies opportunities and risks of emerging technologies. We are currently active in the fields of ICT, nanomaterials, energy and resource management. Most of our publications are available for download via our publications list.
The TSL ist organized in four research groups which have the following missions:
- The Life Cycle Assessment and Modelling group (LCAM) is advancing environmental assessment methodologies to support decision processes and a better understanding of the environmental impacts of future technologies and products.
- The Environmental Risk Assessment and Management group (ERAM) models the distribution, exposure and fate of materials released into the environment originating from new technology applications and products.
- The Critical Materials and Resource Efficiency group (CARE) models stocks and flows of materials required by technologies and products and investigates on resource efficiency and recovery and reintegration into the product life cycle.
- The Informatics and Sustainability Research group (ISR), shared with the Department of Informatics at the University of Zurich, supports the three other groups in developing and applying modeling and simulation methodologies and other advanced algorithm-based methodologies.
