The innovation and cooperation project Sustainability in the Information Society (SIS), funded by the  ETH Board, has been run as one of Empa's research programs for the period of 2001 to 2005.

The aim of this interdisciplinary program was to explore opportunities and risks of the information revolution for sustainable development. These research activities later merged into the newly founded Technology and Society Lab.

SIS consisted of a sequence of projects carried out in cooperation with external partners:

• The Precautionary Principle in the Information Society – Effects of Pervasive Computing on Health and the Environment, in cooperation with TA-Swiss, IZT, and IT’IS (publications in German, publications in English)
• The impact of Moore’s Law on the labour and resource productivity of PC workplaces. In cooperation with KTH (publications)
• The Future Impact of ICT on Environmental Sustainability. In cooperation with IPTS and IZT (publications)
• Security Aspects and Prospective Applications of RFID systems. In cooperation with BSI and IZT (publications)
• Information Systems for Sustainable Development (book project). In cooperation with Wuppertal Institute (publication).
• The final conference of the program: Visions of the Information Society. In cooperation with IFIP TC9, FFRC, TA-Swiss, and SI (conference program)
