Technology and Society Lab

The Technology and Society Lab (TSL) is Empa's interdisciplinary research unit which studies opportunities and risks of emerging technologies. We are currently active in the fields of ICT, nanomaterials, energy and resource management. Most of our publications are available for download via our publications list.

The TSL ist organized in four research groups which have the following missions:

  • Informatics and Sustainability: Assess, develop and apply methods and applications of informatics to support sustainable development and sustainability research. This group is currently rebuilt in cooperation with the Informatics Department of the University of Zurich and is based there.

  • Environmental Risk Assessment and Management: Provide a comprehensive view of opportunities and risks of new technological applicatons, focusing on environmental and health aspects.

  • Life Cycle Assessment and Modelling: Refine methods in the area of Life Cycle Inventories and analyse the effects of products, technical processes and social activities on the environment. This group also hosts the Swiss Centre for Lifecycle Inventories (ecoinvent).
  • Sustainable Technology Cooperation: Analyse global material flows and advise on the sustainability of technologies along global supply chains, focusing on the situation of developing countries.
