| «Spare parts» for humans a challenge for material scientists |

| | At the beginning of November over a hundred representatives of the Medtech industry and those with similar interests gathered at Empa in Duebendorf to learn about the latest developments in the area of implants. The aim of the event was to bring together the most important players in the field from industry and research, to enable them to exchange ideas and experience and also not least to provide fertile ground for the establishment of new partnerships. |

| Miracle nuts fill fuel tanks? |

| | For some the jatropha plant represents the perfect biofuel source. For others it is merely another blind alley in the long search for new energy sources. Empa scientists have drawn up an eco balance a life cycle assessment of the jatropha cultivation process, and discovered that the energy supplying tropical plant gets very good marks. This is only valid, however, if it is used locally and if processing methods are optimized. |

 |
| A wireless bone monitor |

| | Generally, after bones suffer a complicated fracture, special implants are used to hold them in the right position to allow them to grow together again correctly. Together with the ETH Zurich, Empa staff have developed a mechanical sensor which measures the tensile and compressive forces acting on an implant, thus helping to monitor the healing process. The new sensor uses of no electronics whatsoever. |

| First International Conference on Nanotoxicology | 3rd September 2008 |
 |
| Nanoresearchers evaluate the risks of the new technology |

| | How safe is Nanotechnology? Scientists from 29 countries hope to get closer to the answer at the Nanotox 2008 conference to be held at ETH Zurich from 7th to 10th September. This is the biggest international conference of nanotoxicologists to date. Empa expert Harald Krug, who has organised the conference, criticises the fact that there has so far been too little research into the biological effects of nanoparticles. That fans fears and anxieties and may lead to this fascinating technology not reaching its full potential. |

| Being there is not everything where environmental issues are concerned |

| | It is easy to forget that everyday office life with its business travel, conferences and meetings has a massive effect on the environment. Environmentally aware entrepreneurs will sooner or later ask themselves if they really need to be physically present at such gatherings, since nowadays modern information and communication technologies make virtual participation perfectly possible. And, if they do so, will in fact less climate-changing gases be released into the atmosphere? After all, computers, communication networks and similar infrastructure all consume their share of power too. These questions were addressed at the Informatics Day at the Technopark Zurich held on August 29th, where at the Microsoft stand visitors were able to test how much CO2 they would save, if any, if they replaced a real meeting with a videoconference. Using life cycle analysis methods and the «ecoinvent» database, Empa researchers produced comparative data showing what environmental effects were created, and where. |

| A source of water pollution |

| | For many years, fingers have been pointed at agriculture whenever pesticides are detected in rivers and streams. Studies carried out by Eawag and Empa now show that built-up areas also account for a considerable proportion of such inputs. For example, substances can be leached out of facade renders and paints by rainwater and enter the environment, where they may have toxic effects on organisms. In cooperation with manufacturers, cantonal authorities and other partners, the researchers have studied these leaching processes and are currently discussing ways of tackling the problem. |

The blanket is designed to protect the animals from abrupt increases in temperature, as well as the feared chill effect on returning to the stable after competing. Recently the hi-tech blankets were tested on Shetland ponies in the climate chamber at Empa St. Gall with very positive results. |

 |
| How do nanoparticles behave in the environment? |

| | Recently over a hundred scientists from all over the world met at Empas invitation on the «Mountain of Truth» Monte Verità near Ascona to discuss the effects of synthetic nanoparticles on the environment. Although nano-ecotoxicology is still a relatively young field of research, first results were presented at the meeting, among others by Empa researchers who have been estimating the transport rates and environmental distribution of various nanoparticles using mathematical modeling. The results of the study have just been published in the journal «Environmental Science & Technology» and will also be highlighted in the June issue of «Nature Nanotechnology». The study concludes that, depending on the kind of particle and the way it is used, it is primarily smaller flows of water containing a high proportion of waste water which will be affected, while in air and ground samples only small quantities of synthetic nanoparticles are predicted. |

| «Networking» on an institutional level |

| | Cutting edge research and innovative developments usually have several «fathers». Research institutions seeking international acclaim must have intensive cooperation with widely branched expert networks. In the past three months, Empa has therefore continued to strengthen its national and international cross links: In January two agreements were concluded with Swiss Universities the Universities of Berne and Zuerich , and others are still being prepared. Last November, in Tsukuba, Japan, Empa-Director Louis Schlapbach signed a cooperation agreement with the «National Institute for Materials Science», the Japanese «sister institute» of Empa. |

| How metal-containing nanoparticles can stress cells |

| | Every year the scientific journal «Environmental Science & Technology» selects the best scientific works in the fields of environmental science, technology and policy from the over 1200 papers it publishes. The chosen works are those expected to have a significant and long-lasting impact on the field, as the editors write in the April edition of the journal. This year a cooperative project between Empa and the ETH Zurich has been honored as the best work in the environmental sciences category. In their paper the researchers describe the mechanism by which metal-containing nanoparticles can cause oxidative stress in human lung cells. |

| An innovations impulse for the Swiss textile sector |

| | Metallized fibers are currently at the focus of a lot of attention in the textile industry. At the end of 2007 Empa transferred the rights to its patent for a special fiber coating process to Tersuisse Multifils SA in Emmenbruecke, at the same time handing over its pilot plant to the company. This new technology, developed at Empa, will help strengthen the Swiss economy in the global textile market. The new process allows the fiber coating to be significantly thinner than previously, thus reducing both costs and material consumption while improving environmental friendliness and yet still maintaining the useful characteristics of the finished textile. |
