In Switzerland waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) or e-waste is collected and treated in two distinguished recycling systems – Swico Recycling and SENS.

To ensure that material recycling and final disposal processes are compatible with environmental concerns and are implemented at high quality level, the system operators have established its technical control bodies. EMPA operates the technical control body on behalf of SWICO and is part of the technical control body SENS.

Tasks of the Technical Control Bodies are to

• audit regularly on-site the recycling and disposal facilities in order to check compliance with the SWICO and SENS requirements
• check and evaluate the annual material flows in the recycling systems
• review continuously and adapt standards for storage, recycling and disposal
• engage in national and international technical task forces (WEEE-Forum, StEP)
