Vortrag EMPA-VA-2001-07-09-01 09. Juli 2001
09. Juli 2001Surface Forces and Colloidal Processing of Ceramics
ReferentInnen: Prof. Dr. Wolfgang M. Sigmund, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Florida
Ort: EMPA, Dübendorf
Inhalt: Novel approaches for optimized powder processing of advanced ceramics for bulk applications are reviewed. Colloid science has taught the fundamental principles regarding colloidal stability and dispersion properties. Most of the colloidal principles have been applied mainly to control the sign (attractive or repulsive) of the particle interactions. Although these concepts have been highly useful for the development of novel processing methods and optimized slurry handling, we need to go beyond this qualitative level and approach a quantitative implementation in the near future. The need to maximize the solid loading for direct casting application is one important factor. It is clear that when the solid loading approaches maximum packing, not only the sign but also the range and magnitude of the interparticle forces plays a pivotal role in controlling the rheological response. To a first approximation, the characteristic interaction length acts as an increase in particle size, thus increasing the effective solid loading. The colloid probe technique enables the quantification of this layer thickness for a variety of ceramic materials. Novel developments using nanoprobes will be presented.
