| Structural failures following Californias 1989 Loma Prieta and 1994 Northridge earthquakes identified serious deficiencies in seismic design methods. As case studies, the failures became the object of extensive experimental and analytical research during the past decade at University of California (UC) laboratories and private engineering firms. Experimental data generated in quasi-static cyclic tests and dynamic shake-table tests, conducted in California and Japan, provided the data base used for both, the improvement of behavior models and the validation of the analysis method. The purpose of this lecture is to describe recent developments in concrete continuum modeling and its utility in the static and dynamic analysis of concrete bridges, dams, buildings, reactor containments, and other safety structures subjected to strong-motion earthquakes and beyond-design-basis loads. Progress in concrete finite-element modeling state-of-the-art will be illustrated through examples drawn from structural components cyclic tests, shaking-table model tests, and international benchmark programs. |
