Metallic Coatings

PHYSICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION

Highly energetic particles generated in the plasma hit a material (target) by which atoms are emitted. These sputtered atoms lead to film growth on a substrate. In particular, metals are well suited for this process.

CHARACTERISTICS

Polymers are distinguished by their low weight combined with often exeptional mechanical properties at low production costs. Metals, on the other hand, show good optical reflectivity, thermal and electrical conductivity as well as barrier properties against gases. In order to combine such different properties within a new product, thin metal films are deposited on polymers (foils, fabrics, fibers).

INNOVATION

Polymer fibers are metallized within a fiber coater. The coated fibers can be easily processed in textile manufacturing. Especially, silver coatings enable high electrical conductivity with excellent optical properties.

RESULTS

  • Conductive fibers (e.g. for smart textiles)
  • Decorative yarn and fabrics
  • Antibacterial fibers
